However, I’ll be darned if JRBBQ doesn’t come pretty close
to their highfalutin appellation. JRBBQ
has moved into a former Quizno’s sammich shop so the place is small and short on décor. This is a great place
for lunch or for dinner on the run.
I would not suggest this joint for a leisurely dining experience.
The menu is sparse as well – 6 sammiches (including a “Poor
Russell” plagiarizing JackStack) all at $6.99, a combo plate for $13.99, and
some rib options averaging about $2 a bone.
JRBBQ also seems to feature a “sauce of the day” which on my visit was a
playful Cherry Chipotle.
My hirsute lunch-mate and I ordered a Super B (brisket on a
hoagie bun), a Poor Russell (chopped burnt end and sausage on hoagie), and a
kids meal of burnt ends (just to sample the smoky stuff). Total tab came to
$27.13.
The brisket
was moist and tender. Something in the
brisket rub struck me as “unique” – not bad, but non-traditional. Could have been a baking spice like clove or
cinnamon. The burnt
ends were very nicely (heavily!) smoked, though not showing off with any
particular rub. The ends were from the
point and neither as moist nor as tender as I prefer. The chopped brisket and
sausage was tasty as expected.
My professional assessment (based on my
scoring standards):
Brisket... Taste: 8 Tenderness: 9 Appearance: 8 = Overall: 8.4
Burnt Ends... Taste: 9 Tenderness: 7 Appearance: 9 = Overall: 8.2
To JRBBQ I say welcome to the neighborhood, job well done, and I’ll see you soon.
